What is the difference between a normal ONU and an ONU that supports PoE?

Security personnel who have done PON network basically know about ONU, which is an access device used in PON network, which is equivalent to the access switch in our usual network.

The PON network is a passive optical network. The reason why it is said to be passive is that the optical fiber transmission between the ONU and the OLT does not require any power supply equipment. The PON uses a single fiber to connect to the OLT, which then connects to the ONU.

However, the ONU for monitoring has its own uniqueness. For example, the ONU-E8024F with PoE function recently launched by Sushan Weida is an industrial-grade 24-port 100M EPON-ONU. Adapt to the working environment of minus -18 ℃ – high temperature of 55 ℃. It is suitable for system intelligence and monitoring security scenarios under wide temperature requirements. This is not available in ordinary ONU equipment. The common ONU is generally a PON port, and it has a PON port and a PoE port at the same time, which not only makes the networking more flexible, but also saves another power supply for the surveillance camera.

The biggest difference between an ordinary ONU and an ONU that supports PoE is that the former can only be used as an optical network unit to provide data transmission. The former can not only transmit data, but also supply power to the camera through its PoE port. It does not seem like a big change, but in some special environments, such as harsh environments, inability to dig tunnels for power supply, and inconvenient power supply, it is extremely advantageous.

I think this is the difference between PON in the field of broadband access and monitoring. Of course, the ONU with PoE function can also be used in the broadband field.

Although the application of PON access mode in monitoring is not very extensive at present, it can be seen that with the development of safe cities and smart cities, the use of PON access mode will become a matter of course.
