WIFI 6 (formerly IEEE 802.11.ax), the sixth generation of wireless networking technology, is the name of the WIFI standard. It is a wireless LAN technology created by the WIFI Alliance based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. WIFI 6 will allow communication with up to eight devices at a maximum rate of 9.6Gbps.

Development history

On September 16, 2019, the WIFI Alliance announced the launch of the WIFI 6 Certification program, which aims to bring devices using next-generation 802.11ax WIFI wireless communication technology to established standards. WIFI 6 is expected to be approved by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) in late fall 2019. [3]

In January 2022, the WIFI Alliance announced the WIFI 6 Release 2 standard. [13]

The WIFI 6 Release 2 standard improves uplink and power management across all supported frequency bands (2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz) for routers and devices in the home and workplace, as well as smart home IoT devices.

Functional characteristics

WIFI 6 mainly uses OFDMA, MU-MIMO and other technologies, MU-MIMO (multi-user multiple in multiple out) technology allows routers to communicate with multiple devices at the same time, rather than in turn. MU-MIMO allows routers to communicate with four devices at a time, and WIFI 6 will allow communication with up to eight devices. WIFI 6 also makes use of other technologies such as OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple Access) and transmit beamforming, which work to increase efficiency and network capacity, respectively. WIFI 6 has a maximum speed of 9.6Gbps. [1]

A new technology in WIFI 6 allows devices to plan communication with the router, reducing the time needed to keep the antenna energized to transmit and search for signals, which means less battery consumption and improved battery life performance.

For WIFI 6 devices to be certified by the WIFI Alliance, they must use WPA3, so once the certification program is launched, most WIFI 6 devices will have stronger security. [1]
