Knowledge of switch optical ports and electrical ports

There are three types of switches: pure electrical ports, pure optical ports, and some electrical ports and some optical ports. There are only two types of ports, optical ports and electrical ports. The following content is the relevant knowledge of switch optical port and electrical port sorted out by Greenlink Technology.

The optical port of the switch is generally inserted into the optical module and connected to the optical fiber for transmission; some users will insert the electrical port module into the optical port and connect the copper cable for data transmission when the electrical port of the switch is insufficient. At present, the common types of switch optical ports are 155M, 1.25G, 10G, 25G, 40G and 100G, etc.;

An electrical port module has been integrated into the electrical port of the switch. There is no photoelectric conversion process, and the interface type is RJ45. You only need to insert a network cable to connect to the electrical port to transmit. The current common switch electrical port types are 10M/100M/1000M and 10G. The network speed of 1000M and below can use Category 5 or Category 6 network cables, and the 10G network environment should use Category 6 or above network cables.

The difference between the optical port and the electrical port of the switch:

①The transmission rate is different

The transmission rate of common optical ports can reach more than 100G, and the maximum rate of commonly used electrical ports is only 10G;

②The transmission distance is different

The farthest transmission distance when the optical port is inserted into the optical module can be more than 100KM, and the farthest transmission distance when the electrical port is connected to the network cable is about 100 meters;

③Different interface types

The optical port is inserted into an optical module or an electrical port module. Common interface types include LC, SC, MPO, and RJ45. The interface type of the electrical port module is only RJ45.
